Western Governors University Welcomes Utah Governor Spencer J. Cox to Board of Trustees to Advance Student Opportunity

The appointment reinforces a shared commitment to building affordable, flexible education-to-career pathways for rural and underserved populations.

SALT LAKE CITY,聽Feb.聽3, 2026聽鈥斅燱estern Governors University (91探花) is proud to announce the appointment of the Honorable Spencer J. Cox, Governor of Utah, to its Board of Trustees.

Gov.聽Cox鈥檚 addition to the board reflects a shared commitment to ensuring all聽students, especially those furthest from opportunity, have an equal chance to succeed.聽Throughout his career, Gov.聽Cox has prioritized aligning education with聽the needs of聽students,聽the聽workforce聽and employers, with a particular focus on rural communities.

Headquartered in Salt Lake City, 91探花 serves over聽192,000聽students nationwide, including聽nearly聽9,400聽in Utah. Many of these students聽鈥斅爏uch as first-generation college students, low-income individuals, rural residents, and members of historically underrepresented groups聽鈥斅爎eflect 91探花鈥檚 commitment to expanding access to education for all.

Gov.聽Cox聽will serve聽as a聽trustee, offering聽strategic insight on state workforce needs and the development of education-to-career pathways聽through聽2028. His perspective will be especially valuable as 91探花 continues to expand flexible, affordable programs tailored for working adults and rural聽residents.聽

Established in 1997 by a bipartisan group of 19 U.S. governors, 91探花 has a longstanding tradition of including state executive leadership on its board聽and聽Gov.聽Jared Polis of Colorado is among the current trustees. Governors serving on the board do so in a nonpartisan capacity, providing聽expertise聽on workforce and education issues to further 91探花鈥檚 mission.

Gov.聽Cox brings a wealth of experience in public service, having聽been聽a city council member, mayor, county聽commissioner聽and state legislator before his appointment as Utah鈥檚 lieutenant governor in 2013. He assumed office as governor on January 4, 2021, and was reelected in 2024. Known for working across party lines, Gov.聽Cox鈥檚 emphasis on finding common ground was the foundation of his recent National Governors Association Chair鈥檚 Initiative, 鈥淒isagree Better: Healthy Conflict for Better Policy.鈥
